Solar Project Bankability in Zimbabwe: What Lenders Need

Business Setup

Business Setup
M&J Africa November 2, 2026

A promising solar project needs a credible path from development to dependable operations. Investors and lenders need confidence that the electricity can be used or sold, the project can be delivered and the expected cash flow can support its commitments. Preparing those elements together helps sponsors identify gaps before they delay financing discussions.

Build confidence in the revenue model

For a project selling electricity, the power purchase agreement should explain how revenue will be earned and what happens when circumstances change. Payment terms, tariff arrangements, grid responsibilities and the treatment of interrupted supply all influence the strength of the investment case.

The buyer’s ability to pay matters as much as the signed agreement. Reviewing payment capacity, currency exposure and appropriate security arrangements helps sponsors understand the quality of expected cash flow. Resolving unclear commercial terms early gives lenders a more consistent basis for assessing the project.

Connect approvals with project delivery

Land rights, grid arrangements and environmental work should be considered alongside the technical design and funding plan. If these workstreams move independently, a project can appear advanced while a critical dependency remains unresolved.

A coordinated approvals programme helps the team track responsibilities and identify issues affecting the site, connection works or implementation timetable. Confirm the applicable requirements with the relevant authorities and qualified advisers for the specific project before committing to site works or electricity sales.

Match the structure to the purpose

A solar installation intended for a business’s own consumption has a different commercial model from a project selling electricity to another party. A change in intended use can affect contracts, approvals and financing assumptions.

For example, a manufacturer may begin with an own-use installation and later consider selling surplus electricity. Reviewing that change before including sales revenue in the funding model helps management understand the additional obligations and whether the proposed structure supports its objectives.

Prepare a consistent financing case

A credible financing package connects the revenue assumptions, technical plan, construction arrangements and operating responsibilities. Land and grid evidence should support the proposed timetable, while funding commitments should match the delivery programme.

Capable construction and maintenance partners help demonstrate how the plant will be delivered and kept operating. Testing the assumptions together can reveal gaps that a financial spreadsheet alone will miss. This preparation supports more focused lender discussions, although financing remains subject to each lender’s assessment.

Turn preparation into a clearer investment decision

M&J Consultants can help sponsors review the commercial structure, organise project readiness work and align the financing case with supporting documentation. This helps management prioritise unresolved issues and approach funding discussions with a clearer understanding of the project.
